Group Discussion > Is jadeitite a real word and mineral?

Hi members.

Wikipedia.com has a word called jadeitite. It says that it is made up mostly of jadeite. I beleive this is a mistake. Does anyone know for sure that this stone really exist. Please let me know.

Thank you!

Hi Mark,

The Friends of Jade site is mine and I try to keep it clear of as many of these squables as possible. The gem and mineral folks try to limit the number of names for a material and jade seems to be collecting more and more additional letters for the various names.

I've been around the block on these issues for decades. The strange material in Turkey is often called "jade" and sellers say if it's 30 or 40% jade then you can call it "JADE." I don't go down that path. The usual way it's handled by scientists is to say that the material has to be 60% of more to have it's own name.

This is a slippery slope and a lot of strange materials are sold as "jade." Not good and not fair to buyers, but a reality.

My advice.... be careful. Jade is a favorite material for me and I hate to see it wrapped up in these squabbles.

Personally I do not use "jadeitite" because I feel it's a "made up" word to confuse people.

And at the very least, it seems to me that a material should be more than 50% of that material before it can be called by a name..... and actually, most people use 60% as the starting point.

So, my advise as always, is to be careful, know your seller, have a return option, and deal with honorable people and not street venders.

Regards,

Hi Fred.

Thank you for the info. I am not in a dispute with a seller. Since jadeitite does not exist, it is not for sale, yet. I am trying to convince wikipedia that the word jadeitite is supposititious. It has been on that site long enough to confuse many references. These references are now confusing them as they try to confirm the validity of the word.

One wiki member is very convinced by the confusion they have caused. They are suggesting the word to various dictionaries. This made up word is not in any dictionary so far. There are nearly 3000 search results on Yahoo for jadeitite. There are a few photographs, but they are clearly jadeite.

It is such a mess that it may never be corrected.
We know the truth and I have tried to share it.

Happy prospecting!

I have heard the word used yet I have no idea as to the mineralogical mythology of this stone. I have seen jadeites with a vast array of assembled associated materials in the same mass. Omphacite, Eclogites, Pyroxinites, Phengite, Lawsonites.
Jadeite is a pyroxine rich sodium aluminum silicate formed under extremely high pressure at temparatures not exceeding 475 Cel.
Somewhere in the 220,000,000 year transformation from a pillow basalt to jadeite the ore mass can pick up a lot of stuff as it journeys some sixty miles down along continental margins until it becomes engulfed in a serpentine mass and gets floated to the surface.
The most up to date scientific studies are published by, my field gurus, Robert Coleman, George Harlow, Virginia Sisson, Sorena Sorensen and Tatsuki Tsujimori. I have had the pleasure of spending many days in the field with these top Jade brains and consider them to be the best.

This issue over "jadeitite" continues to cause confusion. I wish we could come to one conclusion about what it is or isn't and then get off this topic. As stated numerous times on this forum, just go to Google and read the listings for "jadeitite" and then read the listings for "jade" and you'll easily see the differences. It's all here on my FOJ forum. Thanks and regards,
