Well the Embargo has been signed into law. It is no longer possible to import Burma jade or rubies into this country. Included in the Embargo is all jewelry containing these stones. It seems there is an exception for personal use. Anyone have any comments?
Uh, Sam. An embargo prohibiting Burma jade and rubies into which country? Whenever any of us write anything we tend to think in terms from our own perspective. People of many countries read this website. And do you have any particulars on this embargo? Does it apply to rough material only, or to all manufactured jade and ruby products imported for sale as well?
To the best of my knowledge this embargo applies to all gem material (as well as other products) originating in Burma and being imported into the US regardless of intermediary countries. To read a very cogent editorial by Richard Hughes go to http://www.ruby-sapphire.com/burma_embargo.htm and click on Chevron 1 Ruby 0 This article echoes what another of our members with first hand experience over there told me in Tucson. He may be chiming in later. I would advise all with Jadeite dealings to have documentation as the Feds "seem" to be serious about this and the Gem trade organizations are nervous.
